Forecast Notes doesn't collect any personal data. There's no account, no ads, no analytics and no tracking, and we don't run a server of our own.
What the app connects to
Forecast Notes gets all of its weather information directly from the free public API of the National Weather Service (api.weather.gov). It doesn't connect to any other service.
As with any website, the National Weather Service's servers see your device's IP address when the app makes a request. The app's requests also name the app, its version and our contact address, which the NWS asks developers to include. They don't contain anything that identifies you. The NWS's own privacy policy is at weather.gov/privacy.
Location
The app only asks for your location when you tap Use My Location, and only while you're using the app. It asks for approximate, kilometer-level accuracy.
The coordinates are sent to the National Weather Service to find the forecast office for your area and any active alerts there. The app also saves your most recent location on your device, so background updates can check for new discussions and alerts without asking for your location again. Background updates never request a new location or track where you go.
Your location is never sent to us or to anyone other than the National Weather Service. You can stop using it at any time by choosing an office from the list instead, or by turning off location access for Forecast Notes in Settings.
What's stored on your device
To work offline and remember your choices, the app keeps the following on your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch:
- the office you selected and your favorite offices
- your most recent location, if you used it
- recent discussions and alerts, and which ones you've read
- the list of NWS forecast offices
This data stays on the device, and is included in your device backups like other app data. We can't see it. Deleting the app deletes it.
Read Aloud
Read Aloud uses the speech voices built into your device. The text being read isn't sent anywhere.
Crash reports
If you've chosen to share analytics with app developers in your device's settings, Apple may send us anonymous crash reports and usage statistics. Apple collects these under its own privacy policy, and they don't identify you. Forecast Notes doesn't add any analytics of its own.
